Isthmus 2008 / 2009

Olympia, Washington

A proposal to rezone areas of what is considered by many to be a sacred space, and the heart and soul of Olympia, also known as the isthmus, has been placed before City Government.

As for me, I oppose the rezone - for a number of reasons. I believe that the best use for the land in question is not commercial, but as a park - and specifically as a monument toward humankind's will to make amends with nature.

Humankind, and in particular this society of which I am part, has been very destructive toward the natural world. It's time to make necessary changes so that we can live in harmony.

One part of these necessary changes is creating a waterfront buffer to protect the water from human caused pollution.

Let's make a monument to a harmonious future relationship between humanity and nature.

Let's not make a commercial monument to consumption and materialism, especially as it would exist in the proposed "up-class" luxury condominium development as foreseen in Larida Passage.

We are the change that we seek. Change is now. Yes, we can.
