"God Bless Israeli Bulldozers!"

"God Bless Israeli Bulldozers!" by ^Berd.
Jeff Brigham's message is distasteful; it is hateful [reference]. I am comforted to know that he is in the super-minority in terms of his political views.

Rachel Corrie died in 2003 while defending the home of a Palestinian family against destruction by an Israeli bulldozer. Despite speaking on a megaphone and wearing a high visibility vest, the bulldozer struck and killed her. rachelcorriefoundation.org

Jeff is associated with a group of pro-war demonstrators who have staked out a presence at the Port of Olympia while a military ship is in town to off-load cargo that is being returned from service in the occupation of Iraq.

These counter demonstrators claim to support our troops, but they advocate sending them into a war that was based on lies and false pretenses. They advocate sending our troops to fight an aggressive military campaign... I ask: How exactly is that supportive?

We can truly support our troops by working to end the 'war' and working to hold the Bush Administration (prominent and allegedly culpable officials therein) accountable for their actions.

Hmm. September 11, 2001. Israel declares a day of mourning in solidarity with the American people. National flags are lowered to half-mast. Condolences are sent. Aid offered.

Meanwhile, Palestinians by the thousands pour out into the streets, passing out candy, honking car horns, holding up the V sign for victory, displaying Palestinian flags.

There are exceptions to every rule, of course. But those who displayed such behavior (or tolerated it) on September 11 can fuck themselves as far as I'm concerned.

A lot of people in the world today see the economic behaviors of the USA as one of the biggest problems and one of the biggest and most problematic sources of troubles (i.e. and e.g.: pollution, war, environmental degradation and devastation, poverty, violence, injustice, tyranny, destruction, disease, and etc..)

So, from the point of view of oppressed peoples throughout the world — very much including the Palestinian population — the "World Trade Center" towers of the USA are a legitimate target. This World Trade Complex is directly implicated in harmful activities, including (but not limited to) economic imperialism. What a horrible reality.

I did not celebrate the attacks. Nor do I celebrate the intolerable economic oppression that stems from the policies and practices of United States based companies and goverment(s).

We need change. Something's got to give. Another world is possible.

I don't disagree with everything you're saying per se. The issues are always complex, and bulldozing homes is probably not an effective long-term strategy for peace. I just think that framing the problem as you have done lifts the blame from those who are primarily responsible, and places it on those who are only tangentially responsible. It ignores the glaring problems and their root causes in favor of pet issues that are really much less pressing in their particular situation.

"pollution, war, environmental degradation and devastation, poverty, violence, injustice, tyranny, destruction, disease"

That's quite a list. The Palestians' problems have little to do with the environmental issues you mention. No one is launching rockets into Israel because they have smog, or too much sulfur in their diesel fuel. To the extent that the Palestinians have these kinds of problems, they are a function of the larger, glaring problem - primarily their utter lack of ability to establish functional political or economic institutions and their penchant for violent extremism.

Many, many nations (none more than the US) have made good faith efforts to find solutions these problems, with almost no success over many decades. Another world is possible. It is in everyone's interest to achieve it. But it cannot be imposed from the top down. Peace will come only if moderate Palestinians stamp out extremism and institute effective self-governance, which so far they have utterly failed in doing.

I don't blame anyone for the problems in the world. It's a systemic issue. Certainly, not all of the people who died in the WTC towers were wholly or even partially culpable or responsible for the various oppressions and tyrannies which rage throught the world today. Many innocent people died that day, and it is horrible.

But the root cause of injustice and social/environmental degradation are policies, practices, systems and attitudes of conquest and imperialism. The United States is the biggest propagator of these harmful policies and practicies of domination, conquest, hegemony and imperialism. So, for whatever good the United States does, it is overshadowed by the monstrous and gargantuan bulk of horrible and atrocies activities.

Peace in Israel and Palestine: peace between Israelis and Palestinians depends more on the attitude and behavior of Israel and Israelis than it does on the attitude and behavior of the Palestinians. Yes - both parties need to sit at the table with the honest intention of finding a lasting series of resolutions to the conflicts. Help from Internationals will be necessary and essential to this process. Unfortunately, the United States cannot help because of its biased position. The USA has been discriminatory toward Palestinians, and has not held Israel to account for what can only rightfully be alleged to be crimes against peace and crimes against humanity. Israel does an injustice to not only Palestinians, but to Israelis as well (and all of humanity.)

The path to peace must start with Israel. Israel has the power. Israel restricts the flow of peaceful economic activity into Gaza. So what choice are the Palestinian people of the Gaza strip left? To fight or to die in silence, to fight or to die of starvation imposed by a government, the Israeli government, that isolates them from their families, and from the outside world.

The people of Gaza are ghettoized by the Israeli government. It's wrong. Israel holds the keys to peace. The keys to peace are economic and social justice and equality. As long as Israel looks to Palestinians as inferior and as pests, there will be no peace. Israel and Israelis must accept and respect the right of Palestinians to lead meaningful, respectable, dignified and prosperous lives.

Palestinians whose homes and traditional / ancestral lands have been taken from them must be allowed to return to the lands to which they feel they belong. Israel cannot just show up and kick people out of the homes in which they live, cannot raze people from the land to which they feel that they belong. It's just not right.

Palestinians haven't been able to establish functional political or economic institutions primarily due to harsh conditions imposed on them by outside forces. It's not due to lack of desire or innate ability. It is due to interference.

The US government, in its official capacity, has not made good faith efforts to solve these problems. In fact, the US Government is the greatest enabler of the ongoing injustice and oppression that wreaks havoc upon people and planet.
