25 book group: the characters in my book are exploring an old slate mine in North Wales during WW2 and have come across some intriguing building activity.

Who or what is doing the activity?

Some of the local men are building huts inside the quarry; but they don't know what the huts are for any more than the kids who come across them do.

I love the variation in colours in the slates.

Turns out they were storing paintings from the National Gallery in there, to protect them from bomb damage; and then there was aplot to steal some, which the kids foiled a la Famous Five.

Very interesting. Does the book tell you which slate mine it is in North Wales?
I have visited the Llechwedd Slate mine near Blaenau Ffestiniog but am sure it's not that one. The buildings at the mine were of a similar construction but without the colour banding.

This photo is actually of the slates on the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, so I don't know where the various slates came from - probably all over Wales, The quarry in the book is fictional. I've been to Llechwedd too, though not since I was akid - it's a very interesting place.
