Refreshable Braille device in action

This button allows the user to jump down, line by line for faster reading. Some devices allow the user to hold down the button to continue moving down lines. This particular device does not operate in the same way. Each line must be jumped to with a single click.

Roger Hudson, Lisa Miller and I have been conducting some accessibility tests with a range of blind users. Today, it was Bruce Maguire's turn. The session was very interesting. Bruce is one of the few people I have met who uses the Braille device exclusively rather than partial or full reliance on JAWS, WindowsEyes or some other screen reader.

i would love to see this in action and hear how a user may use the 'skip the line' feature. Sounds really interesting!

It is simply a method that allows skimming. Rather that the user having to move their fingers across the line of Braille for every single line of content on the page, they can jump down line-by-line till they get to content they feel is important or relevant.

There are also buttons that allow the user to jump to the top and bottom of the page immediately.

This device allows the user to access the web directly from within the device itself, or by connecting to a PC and accessing the web through JAWS. The JAWS screen reading software then outputs to Braille instead of synthesised speech.

In this case, Bruce was running the device through JAWS.

A friend of mine uses a braillenote like that (I think it's a braillenote?); it's interesting watching the dots shift.

I've been wandering around looking at photos tagged "braille" tonight; I went to look for a braille-related Flickr group to join, and didn't find one, so I made one. Would love to have you, if you're interested. :)
