Yeah, I'm down-sizing my files in Aperture
before I send them off to Flickr. It just
takes too long to upload the 2906 × 4372
files that the 5D generates. Besides, most of
the sharpness that you'd observe is probably
from the 50/1.2L and not just the sensor.
The "Original" size should give you
a sense for the combo, though.
But yeah, the sensor might be a bit dirty.
It might also have been the lens as well.
I'll have to do some additional checks to see
where things are now. I hope future 5D
equivalents have auto-sensor cleaning
built-in.

You didn't spring for the f/1.2, did you??
This ISO 12233 crop actually gives the edge to the f/1.4 in
terms of CA and perceived sharpness (because
of the CA) at f/16, so I'm thinking the
sensor plays a bigger role here. There's
obviously a lot of detail not visible in the
downrezzed file- any way I can get an
original copy for pixel peeping purposes? I
checked your blog (glad to see you updating
it again) but only saw a link here.
Doubt the stuff is on the lens- even at
small apertures, the front element is pretty
defocused, and the debris is starting to look
pretty sharp at f/16. Man, you're gonna need
a stiff drink if you want to clean that $1400
sensor yourself. Me, I'm cleaning my sensor
every chance I get, hoping to give myself an
excuse to upgrade. Kidding, of course, but
still, I might just do it.

I don't pay much attention to pixel peeping.
The 50/1.2L fits my purposes well and turned
out a really great batch of photos from
Tokyo. Besides, do you shoot test charts
regularly?
As for a full-sized shot, check your work
email (I don't think I have your current
personal address). I sent a copy to you on
Sunday afternoon.

Dude, test charts are hot. I wasn't trying to
denegrate the 1.2L, I was just saying that at
small enough aperture, most lenses are
roughly equivalent. I know the 1.2L won't
bloom wide open in backlit conditions like
the 1.4 will- I have a whole batch of concert
shots that are unusable because of that.
Anyway, I got your file this morning. I'm
really impressed with the detail- not sure
the 20D can get that sharpness at the pixel
level. Something else I wanted to check was
the blue sky. One of my biggest complaints
with the 20D is the blotchy blue skies, which
the 5D seems immune to, at least in this
shot. Thanks for the full size!

No worries — it just seems like many
photography sites obsessively dissect lens
performance and forget about what matters:
capturing great images. But regardless,
you're right that at a small enough apertures
performance generally converges *and* that I
need to clean my sensor — it was a mess. :-)
Glad you got the full-size shot. FWIW, it
was developed using Aperture, so I don't know
how the RAW processing compares to what Adobe
RAW could do. Let me know when you're in the
Bay Area next and you can take my 5D for a
spin.

Are you in the habit of uploading downrezzed files? I was going to check this out at full res to see how much detail/sharpness the 5D can get...
BTW, your sensor needs a cleaning :-)
