Tiger's Nest

Tiger's Nest

During my trek up to the monastery, I waited and waited, until the clouds parted to give me this incredible glimpse of the monastery.

Precariously perched high above the Paro valley, the Tiger's Nest (Takshang Lhakang) is one of Bhutan's most sacred monasteries. It was reputedly first set up by Guru Rinpoche who supposedly flew here on a tigress in the 8th century. The monastery protrudes from an almost vertical cliff wall in the mountain, making one wonder how it was built and what prevents it from falling into the valley below. Folklore has it that angel hairs fasten the monastery to the mountain.
