Pahoehoe, vintage 2004

Pahoehoe, vintage 2004 by Ron Schott.
A toe of basaltic lava forming at the edge of the Amalgamated Shield Complex, west of Pu'u O'o on January 7, 2004. Note the cinders that are stuck to the top of the lobe as it inflates from below. Taken shortly before sunset after a 9 mile hike. Check the "visit an active volcano" box on the Geologists Lifetime Field List. :-)
