went back to the files from last night and found a few more worth processing. Really kicking myself for not driving out to a grain elevator or some other nice vertical object, to create a little more linkage from ground to sky. But these are still the best lightning shots I've taken so far....

hard to say why you're getting noise (I haven't seen the picture that you're talking about -- the ones you posted seemed pretty clean). But using a low ISO, enabling noise reduction on the camera (if that's an option on the D40 -- it is on the D80) and exposing fully (I noticed that yours seemed a tiny bit underexposed if you wanted to get some cloud detail) will all help.
