רוח חורפית נעה עלי פני המדבר ועשתה בגרגירי החול כבשלה אף על כך שלא הייתה לה כל זכות, מכיוון שלא היה אף אחד ושום דבר שיעצור בעדה.
וכל אותם פרצופים שדמיין עשרות פעמים נראו חסרי חשיבות אל עומת אותו פרצוף מפוסל בסלע שעמד מולו, מתעד בפלצותו את כל אשר טהור ונכון: הפחד האופף ברכות וחונק ביד רמה באותו הזמן. הוא המכתיב ומתווה הדרך והוא אשר מחזק את עצמו ומאכיל את עצמו. אין דבר אחר מלבד הפחד ולא יהיה, וכל אותו הירוק שבשכן אינו אלא חיזוק לפחד.
השנים פיסלו אל תוך האבן את תבונותיהן שלא ידע המפסל בעצמו ואמרו "אנחנו כאן ואנחנו כל ואין מלבדנו, ואין דבר הישנה את מתווה דרכנו". ולא נותר לאותו בחור החולף על פני המונומנט אלא להסכים ולהרכין ראשו ולקבל את האמת הכואבת כי דבר לא ישתנה: אני כאן, אני חסר חשיבות ואין בי די כדי לשנות מאום. איני יודע אמת אוניברסלית ואיני יודע אמת אישית ועל כן הכל מעתה הינו בגדר מזעור נזקים.
וזוהי אמת המאכילה את המפלצת ומשרתת את הקיים ואינה מובילה לכלום, וזהו הקסם שבדבר, חשב, כאילו היה זה שגופו ונפשו ברחו לרגע וגילו על מה מדובר ומה יש לעשות, אך לרוח הרפאים שהיה לא היה את הכוח כדי להפוך את התובנה לפעולה.
אולי יום אחד, חשב. אולי יום אחד. מחשבה שעוררה בו אופטימיות ופסימיות באותה העת, וזוהי אולי ההרגשה ששנא מכל.
