the Royal Observatory, Greenwich's
Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2009.

think this is the perfect deep-sky
image; perfectly composed, it grabs your
attention straight away. When you look
closer, the detail is absolutely
stunning, whether it’s the fine
structure in the curtain behind the
horse or the subtle details on the edge
of the dark nebula itself.’
Royal Observatory… says: Of this image, Chris Lintott said, ‘It
is the ghostly images of the Milky Way’s
two companion galaxies that make this
image something very special. The trees
give a sense of being rooted on Earth as
the heavens turn above you.’
Royal Observatory… says: Competition judge Graham Southorn said,
‘I like the fact that these planets and
the Moon are part of our family in the
Solar System. It shows a real sense of
movement – the dance of the planets.’
Royal Observatory… says: Chris Lintott said, ‘The highlights of
my career as an astronomer have been
visits to observatories, the dark places
of the Earth. This shot perfectly
captures the feeling of being there – a
barren, remote place dwarfed by the sky
above.’
Royal Observatory… says: The Royal Observatory's Public
Astronomer and competition judge Marek
Kukula said, ‘I really like the subtle
colours in this image and the way the
star trails appear to line up with the
rock strata on the ground.’
Royal Observatory… says: Photographer and competition judge
Damian Peach said, ‘It is a simple idea
yet beautifully executed and processed.
It is a great image to have as a
reminder of the Apollo landings.’
Royal Observatory… says: Marek Kukula said, ‘What I like about
this image is the sense of mystery and
drama in it. You can really understand
why ancient people associated the Moon
with magic and the occult. It is an
incredibly detailed portrait of the
lunar terrain.’
Royal Observatory… says: Sky at Night Magazine's Will Gater said,
‘From the vast terraced walls of Moretus
to the many small craterlets inside
Clavius, this striking image reveals an
interesting region of the Moon in
absolutely superb detail. I particularly
like the shadow cast by the central
mountain rising from Moretus’s floor and
the detail in the crater Rutherfurd.’
Royal Observatory… says: Patrick Moore said, ‘This image has
caught the interior detail so well. The
photographer took good advantage of the
conditions – the comet’s a one-off
chance.’
Royal Observatory… says: Marek Kukula said, ‘This fine image of
Saturn shows the magnificent spectacle
of the ringed planet beautifully. Saturn
is an especially difficult target for
photographic work and the photographer
has succeeded here in capturing and
presenting an excellent image of this
tough object.’
Royal Observatory… says: Competition judge Rebekah Higgitt said,
‘I love the utter strangeness of this
image – the viewer instantly wants to
know more about a universe that contains
an object like this. The fact that the
shot was taken over three full
consecutive nights tells us a lot about
the remoteness of the view and the
commitment of the photographer.’

These are absolutely stunning shots. Particularly love the 4th one (Milky Way by Nik Syzmanek) -- Chris Lintott expressed it very well how awe-inspiring the night sky can be -- and the 10th one (Comet Holmes by Nick Howes) -- like a giant cosmic egg! The commentary is much appreciated too -- that's what being a "curator" is all about...

I'm a retired teacher. Some of these pictures were in my sciece book in 1993, but the one's that weren't show how far we have come since then. That picture of Comet Holmes really is a jaw-dropper.
