The Trickster

Kokopelli is a busy deity. His responsibilities include making sure that young maidens are fertile, the crops grow and music is enjoyed by the people. He's also known to be a trickster.

A part of his duties in fostering a successful crop is to use his flute to chase away Winter and to bring in Springtime. I am wanting to invoke Kokopelli to do the same here in Oregon.

My mom has always liked Kokopelloi and so I try to locate them in rock art panels in the American Southwest deserts on my yearly sojourns. They are the most recognized figures in Native art, but are also quite elusive. Of all of the Kokopelli's that I have found this skinny angular guy is my favorite.

Kokopelli is usually depicted carrying a bag over his shoulder, some say he has a hunched back. I would like to think that he's carrying a bag with the tools of his trade carried within and this particular Kokopelli is through with his duties for the day and is playing his flute in celebration. We all can relate to that.

On my trips into the canyons each year I carry with me my Native American Flute. There have been times when I felt as if I had an accompaniment. A soft noise heard as I play. Is it the wind, or could it be Kokopelli picking up the back beat? :) Perhaps it is both... a Kokopelli wind.
