Do you think the 50 is doing a better job on the sun rays?

Yes, I think so. The 50D's specs put it a little better in dynamic range than the 40D at the bright end (and a little worse at the dark end). Comparing sun ray shots taken with the 40D in relatively deep water in Wakatobi last October and these shots which were taken in a maximum depth of 6m/20ft with the sun overhead at midday I think the 50D did a better job in more difficult conditions.

Thanks , I've been working on getting the lighting right with the 10-17 for a long time now and generally haven't been happy with my results. It all came together yesterday and I got the lighting right consistently for the whole dive.

what are all those ropes hanging off the boat

They're gear ropes. We take off/put on our tank/BC/reg setup on in the water and tie them off to the boat with the short ropes so they float away while we're getting ready (much easier than walking around and climbing ladders with all that weight on your back in a rocking boat with our tired old bones). The longer ropes are for our camera gear. The safest place for our cameras is over the side when we're putting our gear together and moving lots of heavy tanks and other gear around the boat. They're long enough so that when we come back from a dive we can clip our cameras off before going over to the shot line to complete a safety stop without having to hang on to our cameras.

You've got it well organised. I bet if I did that, I would see something cool to shoot while hanging on the shot line without my camera.
