waiting room

waiting room by rosiehardy.
I came across this room with Kane and Ali today in an old school, with the chairs all nicely arranged as such. This is kind of inspired by the style of Gregory Crewdson - I saw some of his work lately and it is really captivating. It's the kind of work that just gives you those creepy little spine chills without you even realizing! If you haven't seen his work, you really should!

I bought my own 5d mkii today! She's a beauty :) I have a question for people - if you could buy any dream camera gear, what would it be? Do you think expensive gear is overrated? I would love to hear some opinions.

I'd probably buy a 5D too, complete with anything and everything necessary for my own home studio. however i do think expensive gear to some degree is overrated i dont have a DSLR, yet i really like some of my pictures and im pretty proud coz there only taken on 3.2 and 1.5 mp cameras(not really cameras, more like a camcorder and a mobile phone) i think u can achieve lot with anycamera but a DSLR or any expensive gear just enhances that beauty

Some of the best photographers I have seen are using low end digital SLRs. If you wanna print bigger than A2 though, you really need a top res camera like the 5D mkii. A worthy purchase, I'd love one myself.

Wonderfull shot. I love the arrangement of the chairs, and the girl(you?), sitting in the middle.

The question about expensive gear, being overrated? Maybe sometimes. I´ve seen excellent photos, being taken with un-expensive equipment, and crappy shots with expensive cameras, so I don´t think, that it is the camera that makes the photographer.. But I must say, that if the money was to it - then I deffinitely would run out and by myself a Nikon D3x or the new D3s.. Surely, it is overrated for me, at the moment :-) but then again...One gotta dream ;-)
You grow with your equipment - maybe out-grow it someday :-))

Congrats on your new 5D mkII :-)

Maybe you should set the date right ;-)))

Expensive gear is nice, but it's not the be-all and end-all. You don't need expensive gear to take a good photo, as you've proven on many an occasion Rosie. However, that's not to say I wouldn't like an upgrade for my 450d at some point. :)

Nice shot Rosie, good to see you're getting on so well.

i love how you bring such elegance and presence into the frame, it really does look like you've been waiting for quite a long time, as if people have come, wrecked the chairs and gone again and you're still there.
as for expensive equipment, my opinions are: i imagine it can save a lot of postprocessing time which can only be good, meaning more time shooting less time infront of a computer screen. I do think however that some people have more money than talent and get tonnes of equipment, so they have it for the street cred if you like.
However, you dear rosie have heaps and heaps of talent. If it means that you can do even more fantastic photos and gives you greater scope to explore with then expensive gear can be a good thing. Just make sure you dont get swept away with having the latest thing, take time to explore your camera and see how far it can take you/you can take it.
ps sorry for the beast of the essay!
pps im coming up to buxton next weekend, might just bump into you on a hill somewhere you never know.

Really like the colours in this, and the way the chairs are arranged, even if they were already like that.

Im rather jealous of your new camera. For me its either a Canon 5D Mkii or a Hasselblad H3DII. After playing with one recently I totally fell in love! I have mixed feelings about cameras, but I do feel that any camera will take a good photo if you know how to use it and have a good enough 'eye'.

Keep up your beautiful work.

Fenn-o-rama!  Pro User  says:

I assisted a very expensive wedding photographer once. He wrapped his three extra bodies' straps around my neck and made me carry all these reflectors and set up all this extra equipment...

And he was certainly competent, but he just didn't have any wow photos. I knew the cost of his services was largely due to the thousands he had sunk into his equipment. (This was in film days.)

I vowed never to do that. I don't want to have to charge $300 extra for a wedding to pay off my camera equipment. The entirety of my streams is Canon Digital Rebel, Olympus SW point and shoot, Canon S3 IS, Canon S5 IS, cell phone (obviously not professional, the cell phone), and I have some GREAT pics with the smaller, lamer cameras. I carry a point and shoot in my pocket as a back up and take small videos with it of the wedding vows and what have you.

I have used and held and played with super fancy cameras, and I do want to go one step above the Rebel, but I can't see going as high as you have. It becomes too complicated for a girl who used to shoot entire weddings with an AE-1. I can't remember all the features, and I don't want to. I don't like the weight.

I have three lense (kit lens 18-55mm, 50mm prime with 2.8 and macro focus, 18-250mm), and I want only one more (10-22mm). I have one body, and I would like two more (two to use only for professional and a digital rebel as my vacation camera). I have a small Olympus, waterproof, shock proof for the beach and some fashion shoots and I want maybe another good point and shoot.

All told, with a very nice Mac, I'd spend maybe $5000.00 more on camera equipment over time with back ups and everything.

I just don't see the point in dumping $10,000.00 into three pieces of equipment, not counting the computer equipment and lenses and what have you. It doesn't make sense to me. And judging from the quality of my photos, it really doesn't make sense.

Though, if you would like to tell me that my photos suck (short.girl is my pro stream), then I'll happily invest in fancier equipment...or maybe take an expensive workshop!

I just had this discussion with a friend yesterday. A camera is merely a tool that you use. If you as a photographer know what you want to do, but your camera can't support it, then it's not worth it. I have a few different cameras and they all serve a purpose (although, I'm by no means a professional and I'm still learning). I've seen great photos from inexpensive cameras and even cell phones....AND....I've seen unimpressive photos taken with very expensive high end cameras as well.

The most important equipment is YOU!

as for your questions, i think expensive camera equiptment is overrated if you don't know how to use it. like, people who go out and buy a nice nikon and then immediately think they take amazing photos just because they have a nice camera. in my opinion, it's what the photographer is thinking that counts, their vision. the expensive camera just helps capture it.

Great, expense, equipment is always new. Once you get it there is something else that comes on the market. Or if you get into film there are lots of great, old, expense, new to you cameras.

As so many before have indicated, it's not just the equipment, it's the vision. Real art finds its way around technical limitations most of the time. I know that in my own fledgling photographic career as many good images have come out of my XSI and kit lenses as have come out of my newer 50d and L lenses. I firmly believe that talent (which you certainly have) trumps the fancy toys every time.

i bought a 5d Mark 2 and its the best thing I ever did. however you dont need to buy all the top end lenses. There is a cheaper range where they are about £300-400 a lens (prime lens with gold band) ... the only difference between them and the expensive ones is that they have plastic instead of metal surrounds, and the glass is different. In most reviews they say the difference is not noticable. I now have a 28, a 50, and an 85 - and got the lot for the price of 1 lens in the other range.. i seriously recommend them, especially the 50mm f1.4. Just shot a huge project over the summer with them and they were great.
