Tumbling Dice

Newer Older

December 14, 2007 - Following my theme from yesterday, falling game pieces.

Patience pays off. It took a few hundred dice tosses to get 14 that I liked, 4 that I really liked, and this one that's my favorite. That and some trial and error with the lighting along the way.

This shot was lit with a flashlight from the left side and the on-camera flash bouncing off a playing card up to the ceiling. Exposure was 1/15 sec at f/5.6, with the ISO set to 800. I bumped up the ISO because I didn't want a longer exposure (though I could have used a stronger light on the side instead). My Canon 10D is pretty noisy at higher ISOs, but the Luminance Noise Reduction in Lightroom cleaned that up surprisingly well.

I love this; it must have taken you lots and lots of tries to get the trails to show up in such an interesting pattern. Wonderfully done!
