University of Washington interprets 'Obleka' as her name. But I didn't think 'savages' had names in 1904?

What a great link you found! Perhaps the visiting anthropologists/photographers named her Obleka so it would be easier to tell her "Sit here", "Look here", "Put your hood up"...

Isn't it strange that 40 years later this is what they were selling the service folks to send back home? The photos my father and his friend were making seem a bit more pertinent.

geeze, what Jan Egil Kristiansen said, that is just an insult to me. my people were not savages, and OF COURSE we had names in 1904. we've HAD names.
and we've been able to understand the english language too in 1904. just some couldnt speak it, thats all.
i am an Alaskan Native Eskimo 18 year old, and what Jan Egil said was just so insulting. my people have never been savages.
how would he like if if i called his people savages, drunken white people always drinking, the dumb white people who created guns that are ruining people's lives?

I think, I mean...I hope, that he meant it facetiously. Like he is surprised that whoever took the photo bothered to find out what her name was. At least, that's the way I took it. I'm sorry you were offended, though.
