Saline Sterling M-10

Saline Sterling M-10

The city of Ypsilanti, gave this siren to the city of Saline, on a permanent loan basis in 1982. The venerable Sterling was originally purchased by the Ypsilanti Fire Dept. in the late 1930s, for fire alerting. Later on in World War II, it was supplemented by four additional units from Sterling, for civil preparedness and air raid drills.

In 1977, the Ypsilanti City Fire Dept. moved into their new station on West Michigan Avenue. This siren sat dormant for nearly five years in 1982, when it was offered to the city of Saline. The mind set of city officials back then was, "Why buy a new siren, when there are plenty of used ones on the market." Therefore, this M-10 was completely overhauled, and even received a new metal casing to protect it from the elements.

Taken with a Minolta Maxxum 7000, 70-300AF Zoom lens, and a Hoya Skylight 1B filter. Type of film used was Kodak Ektachrome 200 ISO Slide film. Exposure was 1/250th second @ f8. Shot in March of 1989.

Mrs. Mary Bossa 1972 B

Mrs. Mary Bossa 1972 B

My father always told me that there are some teachers who are just there for the paycheck, and there are others who care deeply about their students from the bottom of their hearts. In today's world we read about school teachers who abuse the position they hold, and end up becoming the shame of the school system when they cross the line. However, my second grade teacher Mrs. Mary Bossa was a first-rate professional teacher in every way, who always went the extra mile to help her students and today we're the richer for it.

Mrs. Bossa came from the area around Boston, Massachusetts. If my memory serves me correctly, she lived in the Brockton area, which is in Plymouth County, which is 31 km (20 miles) south of Boston. Mary had a classic Bostonia accent, and sounded just like the Kennedy family. Prior to meeting her, I had never heard anyone New England with such a distinctive accent. However, by the time Christmas vacation had rolled around in second grade, I was really used to it. Moreover, Mrs. Bossa was one of the nicest person in the world, but she could be very strict. The bottom line was simple: she was the firm but always fair.

I will never forget how sad I felt when I learned after summer vacation was over in 1973, that Mrs. Bossa had moved back to the Boston area. Her husband had finished his post-graduate degree at the University of Michigan, and they decided to head back home to be closer to their families. Likewise, she had been offered a teaching job in the suburbs around old Beantown.

A customer at Roy's BBQ sits and enjoys the cooler weather outside, while his order is being prepared. Roy's has some really great barbecue sauce that is out of this world. If you love this kind of fare, then the Pulled Pork sandwich with cole slaw will send you to heaven.
