nepal by candlelight

nepal by candlelight by Ron Layters.
(better On Black)
this is Nyatapola, the highest temple in Nepal and one of the few 5 storey pagoda temples in the kathamndu valley.

during the Bhaktapur festival, small candles (actually small terracotta bowls filled with oil) are placed throughout the temple lighting it up with a fantastic glowing light...

this temple is also famous for it's guardians; this time starting with a pair of Malla wrestlers, who themselves are ten times more powerful than the average man. Next are a pair of elephants, followed by lions, giraffes, and finally the goddesses Bahini (the Tigress) and Singhini (the Lioness). The image of the goddess Siddhi Lakshmi, to whom the temple is devoted, is locked inside the temple, accessible only to priests...

Oh wow, that really is beautiful. I arrived in Bhaktapur on May 4th, was staying in the hotel in that building on the right of frame. Unfortunately Nyatapola was not light up like this, I'm sorry to have missed that sight but I'm glad you took this picutre for us. I suppose this will have been a special effort to celebrate Lord Buddha's birthday.
