a winter's afternoon on Zeebrugge beach
What do you do when you arrive early for the ferry crossing from Belgium to England?
Go exploring with your camera, obviously...
This is the view down the beach towards the next coastal town of Blankenberge with it's famous pier. The tide goes out a long way here, leaving numerous shallow pools of water across the large exposed sands

red grouse
grouse have furry feet, who knew?..
walking on the isolated moorland on the Peak District, you often hear the distinctive call of the grouse but rarely get to see them. Normally sightings are limited to a flurry of feathers as they wait until the last moment of your approach and suddenly fly out from beneath your feet, scaring the bejezus out of you...
Not this chap.
He seemed inquisitive and started to make his way towards the path we were walking on. He was happy to let me take my rucksac off and get my camera out, not affected by the movements that would have his normal bretheren flying away in fright.
Then, all of a sudden, he turned on my rucksack - flying at it with talons outstretched in front of him. I shouted, he wouldn't take no for an answer and decided to turn his attentions to my shins! It was easy to dodge the attacking bird, but he was determined and just wouldn't give up. I hastily repacked my sac (still playing matador to the charging grouse) and we continued on our way. Glancing behind us he was still there, running down the path after us as fast as his furry legs would carry him.
He followed us for over a quarter of a mile before giving up... crazy bird!

missing but not forgotten
the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Portland's Hoyt Arboretum.
It's an interesting and moving memorial consisting of a spiral path that passes a monument for each year of the war. As well as the names of those who lost their lives, there are local news events from that year - a poignant reminder of the things back home that they missed
