Plaza Lights 1

Lights above the Plaza Inn at Disneyland, Anaheim California.
I anguished over this selection, I really love it, but I am not sure about the lightness of the photo, which changes when I upload, and the crop. Bart (Cayusa) suggested a tighter crop that I will post in the comments, however, I decided (at least for now) to use this crop; I like the yellow lamp in the upper left to be wholly included.

Recropped and swapped, lost a little to the right of the pole that included a mirror cast iron swirl arm, and more trees on the left side, but kept the lamp intact.
Thoughts? Critiques? Feedback?
Thanks!

I like the shot, but for some reason the lights in the foreground look like they were PS'd in.

  3. Dyxie (73 months ago | reply)

I am not one to critique anyone's work. I think this is lovely. I love the detail on the little colored lights that are in focus. The only thing I can see that would make this better, is maybe cropping out the iron swirl on the post that is not completely in frame. But what in the hell do I know. I just know this is really nice.

Really? I didn't do much post processing, that might cause that..I'll look at it closer when I get home though, thanks!
Dyxie, You can critique my work any time. I am unsure about that swirly thing too, I may recrop.

I think it's because they are the only thing in focus. It's only the last three that look that way. Maybe add a bit of a blur to them just to take the overly sharp edge off of them.

I think you are right. That's from shooting at f/1.8...but it's also what I liked about it. I have a few of these 50mm f/1.8 shots that will probably make it into this stream...I love being able, with the 1.8 and the 30d's great high-iso capability, being able to take decent shots at such low light...

  8. (M@) (73 months ago | reply)

I've got a 50mm f/1.8 too, and I love that thing. I haven't played with the iso settings yet, but I need to start experimenting more.

Wow! That's an extremely cool shot. Great job!

Thanks, i am using it to try to learn new ways to see...instead of relying on the zoom of the 18-55, using a prime makes you frame shots more selectively, and makes you MOVE YOUR FEET!
Thank you Hannah, youre input is very appreciated!

Wow, I haven't been to Disneyland in 20 years, but even from the thumbnail I thought, "Hey, that makes me think of Disneyland." Great photo, and great job capturing the spirit of the place.

I like it. I did not focus on the swirly thing until after I read about it. The lamp maybe takes a bit away but overall I really like it.

Actually, this is a recrop. The original photo included more to the right of the pole, including the swirly things mirror opposite, on the other side of the pole.

Love the color and the creative use of the lens. Understanding this is a cropped photo and original composition may have placed elements differently, I would prefer to see the focus shift from the red bulb to maybe the orange or blue one further in. This would bring the focal point more towards the center of the photograph. Then again, where it is definitely creates some balance with that huge lamp in the upper left.

Solar, normally, if I have time, I take 3 - one focused foreground, one midground, one background (in those general areas, you understand) but this was practically snapped as I walked by, so I was happy at least ONE of the bulbs was in focus! But I understand your point! Thanks for the visit and the input!
    Thank you!

Interesting composition and content. I kind of like it as a portrait shot instead of landscape, though (see note on the image).

  42. Ron J. Carney (73 months ago | reply)

Interesting idea...I will have to crop it on my PC and see how it feels. I kind of liked the foreground lamp and the post, but losing them may focus the attention more on the lights. Thanks for the idea!
