Motorway Predator by Dadooron

Motorway Predator

A very unusual sight these days. I spent hours in a specially constructed hide awaiting the appearance of the extremely rare "Transitosaurus Rex". This one is a female - as is obvious from the somewhat drab appearance of her winter coat - lurking in bushes just a few metres from the M5 motorway in Somerset.

These animals lie in wait alongside busy highways, their favourite prey being "homo whitevanman" who occasionally suffer an accident or vehicle breakdown and are then the target of predation by the creatures.

Sadly their numbers are few and their recent addition to the "endangered list" is testament to the increasing reliability of modern motor vehicles and shortened response times by the various motoring breakdown recovery organisations.

This individual has also evidently escaped from attempts to trap it, judging by the strap around its neck. (Either that or it's very tame and is taken for regular walks by its owner.) :-)

Winter Light - Shapwick Heath by Dadooron

Winter Light - Shapwick Heath

Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve on the Somerset Levels.

It was a beautiful cold Sunday morning - although a little foggy - and I trudged and sloshed my way to the Decoy Hide in the middle of Shapwick Heath. It was a tad wet underfoot but then this is a wetland. The air was incredibly still and the fog was slowly lifting from the Levels.

I shot this from the Hide with my Siggy 10-20 and an ND grad filter and I'm not really sure if it works. I was unable to get much foreground interest in because of being in the Hide and if I walked around the lake edge the height of the reeds meant I couldn't see much.

I lingered there for a good while and didn't see a soul until I reached tha car about an hour later.

Of course Shapwick Heath is probably best known as the roosting site for tens of thousands of starlings that wheel and dive in the air around dusk on winters evenings but it's well worth a visit at any time of the day or year.

A Drain on The Levels by Dadooron

A Drain on The Levels

I regularly cross The Somerset Levels en route to see a client in Street. The M5 and then relevant A-Road is of course the easier, quicker way to get there from home, but I like to take the minor routes across country. Shapwick Heath is a minor detour and whenever I've driven past it has either been dreadful weather or I've not had enough time to have a wander.

The weekend arrived and it was about time I explored it.

This is the South Drain which runs across The Levels as straight as a die for what seems like miles. It was created in the early 19th century and is one of a number of man-made drainage channels that criss-cross the area.

Still Waters by Dadooron

Still Waters

A Sunday morning in the middle of the Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve on the Somerset Levels. A fog was slowly lifting as I walked along the track around this lake and the light very flat. The birdlife was very quiet apart from some quarrelsome ducks in the distance as I sat in the Decoy Hide.

I gave this a slightly high-key treatment as the light meant that depth and colour were difficult to pick out.

A Winter's Morning on Auchmithie Beach by Dadooron

A Winter's Morning on Auchmithie Beach

Lovely rounded shingle. Wonderful Old Red Sandstone conglomerate and a slash of white quartzite. Add a blue sky and it makes a lovely winter's morning beside the sea.

Auchmithie, Angus.
