sufi dancer in cairo

sufi dancer in cairo by romsrini.
best viewed in the larger size here...

Taken in Cairo, where they have a weekly Sufi dance for the benefit of tourists. Held at night in an outdoor courtyard, the lead dancer was simply amazing.

No, don't crop it. You'd lose those wonderful arches. This has a lot of flavor.

Don't crop it. I like the arches too, but the red is just way too striking for the subtlety of the rest of the shot.

it's really cool but cropped too tight on the left. I would also crop a bit on top but not as much as suggested in note.

the red circle needs to be slightly unsaturated

composition seems a little lacking...guy on left had his elbow clipped

*amazing* movement but not perfection

Too tight of a crop on the left, but that is understandable. Too much empty nothingness up top, not that understandable. The red does give it a weird fake look.

Just on a sidenote, romsrini, are those mosque-issued slippers? If not, why do they have their shoes on?
Posted 43 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

romsrini  Pro User  says:

Thanks for all the comments. I did struggle a little with the cropping, but ultimately decided that I wanted to keep the arches to help set location. As far as the left crop, I needed to crop out another person standing next to the left-most drummer and had to decide between a 5% elbow crop or a 50% person crop.

romsrini  Pro User  says:

The shoes question is a good one. The dance took place at night in an outdoor courtyard, which I'm not sure was even attached to a mosque.

pelirroja [deleted] says:

i don't understand the "empty nothingness at the top comment"... um, isn't it kind of part of the photo to have the architecture? the arches? i love them, i feel that they add to it.

however, the red circle is distracting as it doesn't blend with the tones of the rest of the photo. if the red was the same as the other reds that he is wearing, it would be much better in my opinion. easy to fix. :)

great capture, though, and a beautiful photo!

Night Owl [deleted] says:

Appearancewise (is that a word > lol) - striking but were the colors enhanced?

The crop issue is difficult - to get all subjects included without all of top empty space it would have to be panorama shaped - otherwise you would have to leave out the figure at right in order to get rid of dead space above
Posted 43 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

romsrini  Pro User  says:

Believe it or not, the main color adjustment was to mute the whites, which were almost glaring in the original. This may have served to enhance the red even more. I also attempted to bring out the yellow in the dress a little bit, which also saturated the red somewhat. But, in all honesty, the red in the dress is very close to the original.
