December 12 (disarray)

laptop formerly in this space.
camera, camera bag, and lenses formerly in this space.
A whole bunch of other crap they threw around. Because they are jerks.
December 12 (disarray) by romanlily.
I ran an errand on foot this afternoon here in Decatur, the Friendliest Neighborhood in the World. Or so I thought. Gone for 20 minutes, arrived back home to find all the good stuff gone, everything upside down. Laptop, camera, lenses, etc. gone. Cut the screen on the back porch and came in through the back door, opened drawers, dumped stuff out. Bleh.

I'm writing this at the public library a couple of blocks from my home. Somehow it feels therapeutic to share it here in my state of semi-numbness.

Thank God for renter's insurance. It's $500 I had not exactly wished to spend on my deductible, but I'm covered. It's just stuff, right? My mom, ever rejoicing, says, "Well, at least you didn't walk in on the guy. At least you didn't get shot!"

I suppose that is true.

What's creepiest is thinking of somebody walking around in my apartment, opening my drawers, dumping stuff out, rearranging things. Ugh.

Friends, back up your computer files, write your important serial numbers down on paper and make sure you have appropriate property insurance. I never thought this would happen to me, but it did. I'm really sad about it.

...bad deal. I really am at a loss. I think it's time for a cold beer. I mean, crap. Hopefully you have the insurance thing. Or, alternatively a couple of brothers and a few friends with baseball bats.

I'm so, so sorry. That sucks. I'm grateful for your renter's insurance, but still. Yeah, it would be a long time before I would feel cozy in my home again, and that shouldn't be the case. So sorry, C.

Wow. "Renter's insurance"? You're a better adult than I. If you give me the vitals of the stuff that got stolen, I'll begin the eBay stakeout. Oh, and barf on the thief's head.

Oh- that's so terrible! I can imagine how violated and maybe somewhat scared that you would feel. I am so sorry! Good that you had insurance, but the idea of some thug with his/her dirty fingers all over your stuff and no respect for how much it mean to you...rrrrr!

I work part time at a camera shop- I can get stuff at a discount- if I can help you, don't hesitate to ask.

I am just so sorry that this happened to you. I really can't imagine how lousy that would feel. I need to take care of the things you suggested with computer files, passwords, etc. You are right, you really don't think these things will happen. I hope you will recover the stolen items without too much hassle but more importantly that you will feel happy in your home again soon so you can have another day like November 25th - "making soup, doing laundry, listening to the rain and playing Johnny Hartman".

Aw shit, I am very sorry to hear this.

Sadly I know too many people to whom this is happening. Your advice about backups and serial numbers is wise. I have been telling myself to do this, but of course have not yet.

I am one of many, but if I can help out just let me know.

Here's to happier days!

That's terrible - I agree with your mom in being grateful that at least you didn't get hurt , but the sense of violation is hard to deal with.

I am so terribly sorry. This happened to friends of ours in a great neighborhood in Chicago--they were gone for about an hour--and the thing they found it hardest to get over was the violation of it: the feeling of some stranger rifling through your stuff. I feel so bad that this happened to you. But I'm glad you weren't in danger... your mom's right.

Damn that sucks. And although you feel helpless and violated (we got burgled in Savannah), having insurance helps. Well, if they come through for you, which I hope they do.

And if you need anything in the meantime, get in touch.

When I was in college, there was a point when I had all the stuff for about four friends crammed in my little apartment for a summer. Sure enough, my place got broken into. My entire room was gone over.

I had three stereos, four tv's, a couple of microwaves, and whole mess f camera equipment (including some 4x5 stuff from school).

They took 2 dollars and a pair of sneakers... !?!

When the police were dusting for prints (at my roommates request) they found a big ass print on my kitchen counter under the window. "This is were he got in."

Even though he didn't take anything, it still felt very creepy. I tossed all my personal stuff like my toothbrush.

I am glad you had insurance - just remember to toss your toothbrush out. Keep your chin up.

Oh C. I am so sorry to hear this news! Glad things are returning to semi-normal.

My car was stolen a hundred years ago, with all my stuff in it. Car recovered, nothing important missing, but yes, that creepy feeling of "who has been in here" lingers.

Yay for insurance!

Oh, so sorry, and in safe-feeling Decatur too. Our big violation this year: our Honda Civic, clean gone from the driveway out in front of the house. In Virginia Highland. This urban stuff, not as safe as it feels, sometimes.

Ooof! Terrible. I had some friends visiting from the ATL who live in Grant Park, and they were telling me horror stories about the rise in crime in Atlanta. They blamed it on displaced Katrina victims, a claim of which I'm largely skeptical, although I will say that during the past 10 years, I've seen serious crime plummet in Atlanta and it seems like it's making a comeback.

Meanwhile, Vienna is in a bit of a crime freakout these days as well. There were more bank robberies than ever before -- something like an average of one every other day. Additionally, there are something like 160 break-ins per day.

And on another note, when I was in college, I came home from break, and was the first of my housemates to arrive back in town. I walked in the front door to see the back door slam and several figures darting through the kitchen and, presumably, into the bathroom. I just turned around and walked back out, pulled my car around back and calmly started unloading my luggage (college style -- probably trash bags).

I finally got the courage up to do a room-to-room search of the old Arts & Crafts house we were renting. I found that my roommates Mac was missing, as was my typewriter, a bunch of my and my friends' records, but I didn't find any criminals.

Eventually, I figured out a bunch of dudes had just been living in our house. They only took a few things, presumably waiting to clean us out until the end of their stay before I interrupted them.

They even had got a cat.

Anyway, I've very sorry this happened to you. I have to admit, as the victim of many break-ins and car thefts, you feel more disturbed about having your life invaded and violated than you do sad about the stuff.

Here in not-quite-as-safe East Atlanta, I've suffered a mugging in my own blankety-blank driveway (the bounty: iPod, smartphone, keys and a hot, fresh pizza). Then a week later the f***er returned for the car, though I found it a few days later in the neighborhood when the brainiac left the lights on and ran down the battery.

Me and a lot of other 'hood peeps are ready to start packing and maybe make some rash, in-the-moment decisions with said pieces.
