Congratulations! Nice picture... nice upgrade :)

Hmmmm, this means my friend is slowly going back to the PDA space? I got myself a 3g nano product red but am convinced that my future is an iPhone (when it become available in Brazil). Don't what to use a hacked one.

Great idea, I can't wait to customise mine.
At the beginning I had the idea suggested by Fra and I decided to have a look at flick to found some details and you came, thank you.

By the way I've got a brand new palm in my cupboard for two years now, only used it a couple of weeks when it bugged in the middle of nowhere with all I needed in it.

sebi, glad you like the idea — hope it works for you. If it doesn't, change it to suit your needs! And even better, now you can sell off your Palm to buy some more Moleskines and pens! :-)

Hello, I just decided I would try your system. As I don't have so much to do, I put a whole week on a single page (2 spare lines at the top and 6 cells, the last one being for the week-end). Will see if it works for me for the next couple of weeks. Thanks.

I have had trouble jailbreaking my planners too. It only worked after I used a Pilot G-2 pen on it.

I like the moleskine hack, but out of curiosity what would a portable ical have to do to get you to switch?

Mike Rohde  Pro User  says:

Tony, well, have you tried quickly entering an appointment in iCal on the iPhone/iPod touch? It works but takes like 5 steps to complete. I use paper because I can capture immediately without delays or dialogs. :-)

I use iCal for work and love it, and put in items I need alerts on in iCal to beep on the touch. I think the touch is great for viewing information like my iCal calendar, but not as great for entry. Well, until an external keyboard appears (I hope one does).

That make sense?

Mike Rohde  Pro User  says:

Guess I didn't reply to your question! :-)

A portable iCal would need some kind of single-entry dialog where I could add appointments or information to iCal without messing with 5 steps of dialog boxes. That might get me to consider iCal on the touch as a more regularly used tool for scheduling.

Yeah makes sense, I was just curious and your answer is interesting.

You are obviously open to the idea of buying apple products
You already like and use ical
You have bought something from the iphone/itouch range
But wont use the touchscreen for too much text

Given that apple are unlikely to move away from the touch interface, that means you are unlikely to use an apple as an all in one type device.

I am not criticizing I just wondered what it would take.

Mike Rohde  Pro User  says:

Tony, you're right on.

I like Apple products and the touch, but I find the iPod touch not the ideal tool for large amounts of text input, especially compared to pen and paper. So, yep, I won't really use the touch as my all-in-one device on the same par as the Palm was, mainly because of data entry.

But by the same token, I moved from the Palm to pen and paper too, for similar reasons — I really like the immediacy of pen and paper.

Thanks for the questions, they got me thinking through the touch in some ways I hadn't before. Good questions!

@ Mike Rohde

I have been thinking more and more about what you said and I think I fall into the same category as you although interestingly enough I have a slightly higher 'tech threshold' than you.

I have, use and love an iphone which I use for my calender.
I often toy with the idea of going back to a moleskine diary and I prefer that idea and process (the writing as opposed to the touching)
But I already carry a molekine notebook and a cahier for my notes and task managment type stuff so another would just be too much to carry.

...so I guess its a trade off, the calender is the thing I dont mind digitizing....if thats a word :)

I will face an interesting dilemma once the iphone/touch platform expands, even the release of a mini bluetooth keypad and notes application would force me to at least try it :) But given the speculation around the SDK release and the apple imposed limitations that might be a way off yet.

mike, your design inspired me. i was using an "august to august" planner made by: mixed role productions (check em out), which i loved but the moleskine self planner enables me to tweak and modify. By the way im a huge fan of the: Pilot Precise Gel 07 --a fabulous ultra fine long stem.
cheers.

I'm anxious to find a pen that doesn't bleed through. However, I want to get a squared pocket moleskine and do the same thing you've done. Is the paper thinner do you know? How would you suggest dividing it up? What's the best pen you've found?
