Pineapple Thank You Card

My scuffed up hand from a walk in the jungle. Turned out OK though.

Pineapple Thank You Card by Mike Rohde.
While in Belize in July 2007, I and a part of our service team paid a visit to a Mennonite family in Belize. The family was incredibly hospitable to our team, offering fresh pineapple juice and friendly conversation at their home overlooking the river.

I wanted to say thanks to the family, but what can you offer a Mennonite family that they don't already have? How about a hand-made thank you card?! :-)

With this in mind, I drew up a little thank you card on some spare construction paper, had our team all sign the back, and then sealed both sides with leftover clear contact paper.

We took a small team up and presented the card to the family, which they loved.

Thanks to Laura Winslow with Praying Pelican for snapping this shot of my sketch before it was sealed and delivered.

What a wonderful gesture! This card is something they will always cherish. You're a very talented artist and designer.

Tracy, thanks! It was more a MacGuyver type situation of "hmm, what can I use -- hey yellow construction paper and contact paper, cool!" than planning. Seat of the pants more or less. :-)

I find working in pen is good for me, because as I practice and use it, I make fewer mistakes because the stakes are higher. I also find myself either being OK with flaws or working them into something else so they are no longer flaws.

goldmancafe — thank you! I was hoping this little thank you card would be something the family would enjoy receiving and they did. Its a good feeling having your art out there in the hands of people.

Funny, that's why I doodle exclusively in pen. I like having to 'not worry' about mistakes, because like life -- mistakes on paper cannot be erased, they can only be molded into something new.

Agreed! I love pen for that very reason, it forces you to turn errors into interesting solutions.
