Bad day at the office

Bad day at the office by Roger Smith.
Carl Edwards trying to get out of his car after a last lap crash at Talladega Superspeedway durin ghte 2009 Aaron's 499 Sprint Cup race. Edwards was turned in the tri-oval by surprise race winner Brad Keselowski. His car flipped several times and hurtled into a fence injuring seven spectators. Edwards was uninjured.

It's late, and I'm tired, but more photos from Talladega will be coming soon.

I don't watch much Nascar but I always watch Talladega. The finish is always spectacular. Great shot here! Were you ducking debris??

Doc,
No, I'm in the tower at the start/finish line, well down from where he got into the fence.

Strider,
I guess this one was spectacular enough even for the Beeb to pick it up. Those are some great shots in that link. I haven't seen a replay yet, it's amazing how fast it all happens.

Nice shot Roger! Looks like you were directly in line with one of the ESPN cameramen from the looks of one of the replays. Yeh I had my camera up to my face when Edwards started to spin. I just couldn't click off pictures, thinking that someone might have gotten seriously injured or killed... etc. I don't know how I would have felt about catching someone getting killed.

Thanks. The TV camera was about 20 yard to my right. I have a blurry photo of the moment the car turned sideways, but then, most of the rest of the wreck was obscured when everybody stood up.

I had just leaned over to the guy setting next to me, who doesn't normally follow racing much and said "If he wins, he'll do a back flip on the frontstretch". After he got out, and I realized that he wasn't hurt, I leaned back over to him and said "He normally gets out of the car first!"

A buddy of mine was at the race and said Edwards got out of hte car, ripped off his radios and such, and finished the race on foot. He just wasn't going to be that close and not cross the finish line.

Great shot.

That is true, George. We were trying to figure out what he was doing when he got out and started running frantically in what appeared to be the wrong direction.

Awesome shot. Man, that car is some kind of twisted up! Still trying to figure out how the carb got ripped right off the motor.

Well, NASCAR got exactly what they deserved after the the call with Regan Smith last year. If that finish had stood based on the "in sight of the checkered flag" exemption to the yellow line rule everyone thought existed, then this crash never would have happened.
Just real fortunate this wasn't a ton worse.

Thanks for sharing a great photo.
