London Riots, Clapham Junction
Emergency services attending to a building on Lavender Hill that was set alight about midnight last night. Prior to this, looting of the Debenhams department store (opposite the burnt-out building) had proceeded for several hours without police intervention. As you can see, the building torched was likely to have had residential occupation above. Picture taken at about midday tuesday when this major road junction is normally extremely busy.

Apart from one of those shops which has a solictors offices above, and a couple used for storage for the shops, I think the rest are flats. They were worried about the helium containers that the Party Shop used for the balloons. It seems that all the fires were set where highly combustible materials were inside - nasty. We did go there this morning but couldn't get past the cordon in Falcon Road. Seeing the video and other photos on flickr actually made me weep - this is my area. The only shop they didn't trash was the book shop...

I lived above that building that took the worst of the damage, about 17 years ago - it used to be an off-license and there was a rented house above with 4 bedrooms. I don't recall there being a fire escape, except being able to jump out of the rear window onto the flat roof of the shop, which extended further behind the back of the house. Really hope the occupants managed to get out in time...
