It grows as a parasite on the roots of trees and shrubs, only appearing above ground when it produces flowers. It doesn't have any chlorophyll, hence the rather ghostly appearance.

My photo was also in a botanical garden, Delft. A nice collection of Toothwort there. I didn't see the A. nemorosa this year though.
