Unidentified Fungi

Unidentified Fungi by Roger B..
Walking in the Rivelin Valley. I spotted these tiny mushrooms growing from the moss-covered trunk of a riverside sycamore. The cap of each mushroom is less than 10mm across.

Tough one this, Roger. We found loads like this in Hutcliffe Wood. Even after a lot of microscopy I wasn't able to pin them down with confidence, so I recorded them as Mycena sp., rather than ignoring them. Sometimes they bleed a "milk" or "blood" if you break the stem - that can help. There are something like 170 sp. of Mycena in Britain and Europe - according to the books. Phillips has just a selection.
