Airbag

Airbag by Surfactant.
Patient was a front seat passenger in a car and had right foot on the portion of the dash where the airbag deploys. The car was involved in a low speed (25mph) crash. The passenger airbag deployed, tearing the foot from the tibia and grossly dislocating the talus. Driver was uninjured.

I often put my feet up on the dash before I saw this case. Not anymore!

People don't believe me when I tell them that this can happen. Airbags are a good thing but they are extremely dangerous if you don't respect them. Things like woman who sit right against the steering wheel, they are going to get messed up.
Nice x-ray too.

I always tell my wife to not put her feet there. Her response is always 'don't get in a crash'. Grumble...

When I saw the thumbnail I thought it might have been from an aircraft crash. But a low speed accident with airbag deployment .. that is scary

Keep in mind that your overall risk of serious injury, or death in a motor vehicle accident, would be much greater in the abscence of airbags. They are truly life-saving and injury reducing devices.

I absolutely agree, I get very frustrated with the people who feel they no longer need seatbelts because of their airbags! we have had several people ejected from cars because their drivers airbag didn't save them in a rollover ..... winder why they are called SRS (suplimentary restraint systems) Airbags!

Breaks my heart to see people riding with dogs or small kids in front seats. Sometimes they think to turn off the airbag for the kids, but I'll bet they don't for the dogs.

Had a friend with feet on dash... in wreck not only had issues with airbag, windshield broke and foot went through. Either airbag or other impact drove glass into leg and cut artery... EMS did a great job and saved her from the blood loss, but it was many months before she walked again.

The fractured calcaneus (from what I can see) is the most surprising aspect of this accident from my perspective.

I love those radiography images of yours, as a student, I find them really helpful.

ulfy01, I can see why you would suspect that the calcaneus is fractured. The patient is laying with the lateral side of the RIGHT leg down against the image receptor. The calcaneus is partially obscured by the distal tibia, and it makes it appear as though it is damaged. The only real osseous damage here is to the talus, seen as the ovoid shaped bone at the right of the image.

I almost had this happen to me as well. I was sleeping and had my feet on the dash of a minivan when the driver slammed on the brakes, which woke me up and i had enough time to pull my legs down, about 2-3 seconds. The impact was about 25mph as well. Makes me glad I have excellent reflexes.

MDBurns, it depends on how your body fits in the car and where you're sitting. (That is, I can imagine it's less comfortable for the driver or someone in the back seat.) I find it very comfortable to put my feet up when I've been riding in the front passenger seat for an hour or so, but every time I do, I picture this x-ray. I swear. Then they come right down.

I've been lobbying my wife to stop resting her feet on the dash like this since I first saw this over a year ago. Sometimes, she still insists on doing it. *sigh*
