ca. 1325-1352 - 'Willem Wenemaer (+1325) & Margaretha Sbrunen (+1352)', Oudheidkundig Museum van de Bijloke (now STAM), Gent, province of East Flanders, Belgium

The brass of Willem Wenemaer (+1325) is one of those rare items, exceptional pearls, that has accidently survived throughout all of the previous centuries.

His armour consists of many strange and (as far as we know) uncommon features, e.g.:

- the chains connected to his hauberk and not to a coat-of-plates (normally already worn beneath the surcoat around this date)

- a surcoat with short sleeves and a strange V-neck instead of the common sleeveless garment with a round neck

- the heart-shaped shield instead of the common heater-type

- legs covered by greaves and poleyns but no sign of mail worn underneath. Could this be a result of the restoration of the brass in 1589 by Lieven Plumion or doesn't Willem wear mail chausses at all?

- the strange shape of the pommel of his dagger

The inscription on the sword says: 'horrebant dudum reprobi me cernere nudum'.
