In the Rockies, we see 4 wheelers and 4 wheel drive hoodlums who are as tough as their trucks. Just because any road ends, it does not mean they have to get out and walk when they can just forge on. Every once in a while you will see a truck with mud up to the windows. I generally, I turn them in to the Forest Service so they can get the maximum $70 fine. I ran into one ranger who caught one of them in a wilderness area. Instead of a fine, he took the keys and told them they would have to pack it all out!

They get more indignant every year when more of the back country roads become off limits thus ruining the experience for who are willing to tread lightly. If they come to me, I usually get dumb quickly and forget how to get to all the backroad access points.

When you gently make it to the end of a back country road, pack it up then pack in if you want a more meaningful experience. More discerning back country addicts avoid areas that will never be peaceful. I personally have driven back country roads for a discovery trek but upon walking the same track I discovered that I had noticed little or nothing from the vehicle.

The fellows in this shot were willing to pack up at the trailhead!
