Quadruple Counter Balance

I had 2 ducks - witnesses the whole process . . .
And a fly???
actually it was a little part of a submarine periscope - maybe from Russia, or China, or Fiji or Albania. or maybe an UFO . . . he . . he . . .
Quadruple Counter Balance by billbalance - off.
Crissy Field SF 2003 - all 4 Rocks were counter Balanced against each other - this is 100% opposite to Straight UP Balance. In straight up balance, You place the Rocks upward from the start using Your two hands holding the Rocks one by one to Balance the formation. In counter Balancing, when You are positioning the Rocks upward - You have to hold the Rock one handed - place it on the intended point of connection while Your other hand, pick up another rock to put on top of that other rock earlier. At this moment You have to find a`way to Balance those 2 rocks altogether - it is even harder if You are using very small contact points . . . it is even harder when You put two more Rocks on top of that . . . all counter Balanced . . . . Wow . . I didn't Know how I was able to do THAT - especially doing it outdoor near the Golden Gate Bridge . . . a lot of Wind . . . [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Dan

Its really amazing, how many attempts did it take and how much time?

I havent done nearly as many or as spectacular as yours but you start to get a feel for the balance dont you, but even so, its still really difficult and lots of patience required. The amount of times i have finished one then gone to grab the camera for it to fall before the photo is taken!

You are most defintely ace in your rock balancing, very very impressed.

. . . Just take Your time . . . start with the sizes that comfortable to Your movement and strength : arms, elbows, wrist, fingers - the same with Your feet and other muscle system on Your body - I am left handed - so most of the time I favor My left hand to lift and control the heavier Rocks, but sometimes the position of the Rocks formation requiring Me to use My right hand instead, and if You use more than 2 or 3 rocks to counter Balance You have to expect at one point those rocks "won't care whether You are left or right handed".My points here is don't start big - it'll come later on through time and learning process.

Anybody else need to know a little bit about the process, please let Me know - I'll try My best to give You some Pointer . . .

Totally nuts! You need to start a set with insects on or close to your balances. Birds are cool, but in my opion (says someone with an entomology degree) insects are cooler!

Thank's Citril . . . First of all don't be too modest about the Scots . . You have The thousand of years traditions about Rocks Structures - formation - cairns - dolmen etc, up to Andy Goldsworthy . . . I picked some good idea out of all that . . .
Anyway, You never know - I never know about My future traveling plans - maybe all of a sudden I am there in Scotland - I was there a few years back enjoying the scenery . . .
About the counter balance - just try first with a double counter - don't worry about the size of the contact points - move, lift and twist the rocks gently and slowly - just keep in mind that You are balancing 2 rocks at once [ select rocks size that fit to Your strength ]. Let Me know the result latter on and I'll give You more Pointer - Have fun . . .

Thank you! I always feel a deep affinity to ancient cairns, etc, especially the ones in Argyll. I watched a couple of videos about counter balancing, and am going to take some wee notes and give it a go next time we are near rocks. I'll take some pics and keep you posted! This is all so fascinating! :)

That is so beautiful. A sense of tension and stillness at the same time. Do you have to become really calm and still inside when you are balancing ?

billbalance - off  Pro User  says:

Yes . . . in other words You have to be Balance Yourself - Physically and Mentally - You have to be focusing on different aspect of the process - trying to feel and "catch" the momentum of 4 different Rocks that at any time have different unpredictable tendency to move left-right . . . at the same time physically You have to maintain the stillness of Yourself which is as hard as Balancing those Rocks - You have to have enough strong muscle system to deal with those Rocks - sometimes, because the ground are not level, Your footing position has to be adjusted accordingly maybe You favor Your right or left foot as an anchor - and when You lift the Rocks, they feel more heavy etc . . . I am left handed - sometimes while I am holding two Rocks altogether and connected them on small contact point - I have to maintain the "stillness", while I grab another Rock with My right hand [ the weaker one ] and try to Balance all those Rocks simultaneously . . .

You are so inspirational, bebalance! Every time I see rocks now, and I mean every, I wonder if I can balance them! I know it will be a long time before I can do anything even remotely similar to your art! And it really is about your inner balance as much as your physical balance! This may sound silly, but some rocks really seem to jump out when you look at them!
