Make Way for English Channel!

You can tell he's thinking "Eh, I can fit."

Hands down the most exciting race that I've seen during the Belmont Park 2007 Fall Championship Meet.

The gutsy English Channel (rail), guided by John Velazquez, squeezes through a small opening on the rail and wins the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational.

The crowd roared with approval at the chestnut's determination and boldness.

A fantastic shot, Sarah. How do you get this kind of thing - ie do you use a long lens or have special access trackside? Have just been given permission to access all areas at Haydock Park (local racecourse to me here in the UK) for sketching/photography purposes and am really looking forward to next meeting so would be useful to have some tips as to what kind of places are best to hang out at from a pro like yourself!

Thank you very much! I was so glad that I happened to get this shot after the turn instead of staying at the finish line. I hold my breath every time I watch the replay- what amazing riding and what a gutsy horse!

dotteril1 - Congratulations on your new track access! A photographer friend of mine was kind enough to let me borrow his 300mm lens for this particular shot but I use my 80-200mm f2.8 lens for just about every single one of my racing shots.

wonderful capture! Your race horse pictures remind me of how I got into equine photography in the first place. My grandmother was a judge's secretary and he used to go out to the track during his time off and shoot. I'd visit her at work and I'd sit for hours and look through his photo albums. I loved the frozen action of the horses running full speed. THAT'S what started me on taking pictures of horses in action :)
