Lighting storm

Lighting storm

Here are the steps you need to take to shoot lightning:
1. Set your camera to aperture priority mode and stop down to about ƒ/8. If you go smaller than ƒ/8 the lightning may show up too dimly.
2. Pick a low ISO (100 or 200). The goal is to make your ISO low so that your camera's meter will need to pick a long shutter speed in order to compensate for the low ISO. The longer the shutter speed, the greater the chance of lightning happening while the shutter is open and you catching lightning.
3. If your camera can do it, set it to automatically take consecutive photos. The D7000 has this option and it takes the aggravating work out of taking lightning pictures.

The goal is to keep your shutter open as much as possible since you never know when lightning will strike.
