Kalmyk Lady from Kazakhstan

Kalmyk Lady from Kazakhstan by RobW_.
Oriental in appearance, and with striking looks, she was chatting away in Russian, or Serbian, to our other Russian/Serbian customers, and she also speaks Greek. She says she has lived in Athens for 5 years, and comes from Kazakhstan.

She corrected me when I showed her the photo of her son headed "Kazakh Boy". Although they are originally from Kazakhstan, they are ethnically Kalmyki.

The Kalmyks are West Mongolian people who have lived and grazed their flocks in European Russia for centuries. Their religion is Tibetan Buddhism. There is a Republic of Kalmykia in the Russian Federation.

There may also be a connection with Belgrade, because there is a large Kalmyk community there after Stalinist persecution, and she spends a lot of her time speaking to our Serbian-Russian guests, Drakan and Marina.

There is also a connection with this party, who visited us in 2003, relatives from Almaty in Kazakhstan.

I wonder why you are keep saying that they are from Kazakhstan. Did they say that they are from Kazakhstan?

Because they are originally from Almaty in Kazakhstan, although now resident in Athens. When I made the mistake of captioning the picture of her son as a Kazakh, she corrected me, pointing out very clearly that although they were from Kazakhstan, they were actually Kalmyki. Since I had never heard of Kalmyks, I did some research, which educated me.

All this was explained fully in my caption - did you bother to read it?
