IE6 denial message for Momentile.com

IE6 denial message for Momentile.com by John Martz.
This was such a fun project -- this is what users of Internet Explorer 6 see when they visit Momentile.

You can see sketches and a bit of the process on my website.

Most people using IE6 don’t know they’re using IE6. They don’t know the difference between Yahoo! and the internet. This would just be extremely confusing and frustrating to them.

That said, it's adorable and quite clever.

Thanks, folks.

John Holdun, in context the actual page asks visitors to upgrade their browser.

Kingbeecreative, I hadn't noticed any faces in the ladder; purely coincidental!

Sorry to spoil the love in but as someone viewing on a work PC which is enforced to use IE6 and who can't physically upgrade it because his PC is locked down...

Okay so I also have Firefox and use that all the time, but most of my colleagues don't and we as a web development community can do nothing more damaging to our users than assume that people can upgrade when they can't.

It's entirely up to site owners to do what they want on their sites (I do on mine) but don't blame the user...

@bods
i don't understand why people comment on this complaining about not being able to update the browser! This is a commissioned illustration that
John did for a company, he has no responsibility or control of how anyone runs their website & what browsers they optimise it for.
I'm not saying it's not a problem but this is the wrong person to complain to. He just did a funny & brilliant illustration! :-)

.schill  Pro User  says:

Many large companies are still using IE 6, but the amount of "support" for them is still dropping nonetheless - particularly with new web sites, start-ups etc. (Related: State Of The Browsers: IE edition, by PPK of QuirksMode.) It is interesting to note that IE 6 peaks during work hours, suggesting indeed that corporations are the ones hanging on to this browser for "mission-critical" internal/internet apps, and so on.

Given IE 6, released in 2001, is a full two release versions behind the current release, calling it old is certainly fair. It introduces extra development and support costs, and compared to the newest browsers is significantly slower (and less-secure), et cetera.

Granted I'm preaching to the choir here, for the most part, but I agree it's not time to completely ditch support for IE 6 yet. (We continue to support it as an "A-grade" browser at Yahoo!, for the record.)

In the future and as market/user share continues to drop, I can see IE 6 being eventually given degraded (but usable) CSS and a simplified design/experience, especially on brand-new web sites, vs. trying to add hacks to make the layout work. Alternately, there are also ideas like Universal IE 6 CSS which suggests something along these lines and may be interesting reading.

I'm not saying it's not a great illustration. Cos it is. And I'm not accusing one person of wrongdoing. It's just a wider problem and the wrong message is going out. And I'm sorry if I've offended people.

For me all this actually needed was the website to put a better message at the top. "Sorry - but your browser can't cope with our site. Here's why..."

But instead the standard approach seems to just be - and this is a wider issue beyond one site - "Oh just upgrade".

Yeah, this was drawn recently! Where's Chrome? Or is the new kid on the block not invited to the treehouse?

There'll be a sitcom about it, and Chrome will eventually become part of the group. The show will air for three seasons before its popularity will wane.
