Maoz

It's denser than most falafels, but ...also better than most falafels? Moist, mostly crispy on the outside. Each ball is freakin' huge though, like a mini muffin. The taste was slightly different than what I was accustomed to, but I couldn't place the flavor. Like...something...floral, but probably not. I DUNNO, someone help me out if you've eaten this.

LOL, the "pea-ness" comment reminded me of Julie Powell on Iron Chef America. :P

i haven't had maoz's falafel, but i remember someplace in nyc that added cinnamon and clove to the normal falafel spice mix which is generally coriander, cumin, garlic. fenugreek? did it sort of taste licoricey? coriander's the seed of cilantro and similar in taste. cumin tastes like...cumin.

Chotda: Maybe it had ...that! Taste a little sweeter, or something, without actually being sweet.

I think Chotda's on the right track-- it's something licoricey, like fennel seeds or something.

The Maoz in Philly's good, too. We passed by several Maoz stands in Amsterdam, but didn't go in.

i'll bet there's fennel seed in there for the licorice, and fenugreek for the sweetness. fenugreek has that sweet/not sweet quality, like sweet green peas, or celery dipped in xylitol. not that i've ever dipped celery in xylitol.
