Foxbase Alpha

Foxbase Alpha by -RobW-.
As a kid, and in fact still, I was fascinated by futurology images. My bedroom was wallpapered with posters of how we'd live in the year 2000 - giant orbital habitats, 3km tall skyscraper cities with parks in between - you know the sort of thing. Futurama, basically.

The trouble with that is that 2000 has been and gone, and I'm not living in an orbital habitat, damn it. I can't holiday on the Moon. I'm severely disappointed.

This picture is an attempt to recreate that look. It is supposed to imply either an orbital or otherworld habitat. I haven't decided quite which.

It helps that the Atomium was built in the 50s, the golden era of futurology. It's the best example of the sort of place I was sure I'd be living in by now I can think of.

It's beautifully composed! Really futuristic, and yet half a century old.

I share your thoughts :-) Some things that I as kid imagined the future would be like have not come true. But then again, things I couldn't have imagined are now everyday life.

Wow, a great view of the atomium. And I like your story with it.

I was sooo scared in that thing as I am afraid of heights on things made by people (like bridges, towers etc). I get the feeling all over again by seeing this pic.

Thanks all! It did take a while. The main problem I find with digital art is knowing when to stop! :o)

So I always spend at the very least two days on anything - finish for the night, get some sleep, and then look back in the morning to see if my ideas were as good as I thought they were at the time :o)

wonderfully abstract in so many ways.
the shape just draws upon so much sci-fi-esque elements.
love the silvery details and overlay.

Great work. It deserves to be used as a poster.

I'm disappointed by the lack of personal space travel too. Remember watching 'Back to the Future' in '85? McFly travelled back 30 years to 1955, and things sure were different. Then he travelled 30 years forward to 2015 where he had flying cars. Well, 2015 is only 8 years away and I don't see much progress since the eighties, apart from lack of shoulder pads, the addition of the internet, and Flickr!

Yes, definitely. I don't see us hovering in 8 years time. We are still using technology Leonardo da Vinci came up with to hover!

It's rubbish, is what it is.

Brilliantly composed, great narrative -- and the enlarge-o-mat is just out of this world! Yeah, I'm still waiting for my jetpack to zoom around with.

Yes, phones have actually exceeded predictions. Even relatively recent sci-fi films feature video phones that are big honking CRT desktop devices - now I can pop into my local O2 shop and get a video phone that fits into my pocket.

If NASA were ever to decide that stairs would be practical in space, then I'd be first to sign up to live in a structure like THAT!
