Holiday Inn

Holiday Inn by Robby Edwards.
Henry Ford Museum, July 2008

Another piece of Americana. Holiday Inn was established by Kemmons Wilson to provide inexpensive family accommodation for travelers in the United States. The first Holiday Inn opened in Memphis, TN in 1952. The name Holiday Inn was given to the original hotel by his architect as a joke, in reference to the Bing Crosby movie of the same name.

I remember these fantastic, over-the-top Holiday Inn signs from when I was a kid. It is too bad they got rid of them. Those Holiday Inn Express signs have zero pizazz.
