Autumn Sweater CD Cover
I worked up a CD Jacket image for a collection of tunes I would like to put together. While listening to a number of selections yesterday that reminded me of fall and November, Yo La Tengo's Autumn Sweater became the defining point and impetus. If you care to leave a comment, I'd like you to suggest a favourite track, a track you would like to see included.
Packaging created with fd's/bighugelabs' very cool Personalized CD/DVD Cover Tool.
Be sure to check it out here.
Larger version and printable size too.

it's a great idea. but it's supposed to be 38C here today and tomorrow is the last day of spring. i think I'm in the wrong frame of mind for autumn tracks... I'm playing summery music.

I hear you, Jay, and I sympathize, really... having to put up with all that warm weather ahead. :) How about a bit of Mogwai › Summer.

I can never pick just one track! For Autumn-y songs I would suggest nearly anything by Nick Drake, "Resolve" or "Sand River" by Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man from their album Out of Season, or maybe "These Days" by Nico, or "The Fairest of the Seasons", they're rather Fall-ish. :)

Hmm..one of my favorites at the moment is Sun Kil Moon's Truckers Atlas.
btw, YLT is a big fav of mine..nice work.

I thought of Gordon Lightfoot's 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald'. It always reminds of of autumn. Hopefully not too depressing for your CD!
Great idea - love the CD cover toy. Whenever I make a square picture I always think it would make a good a album cover. So I guess I am from that age. :-o
roamin (67 months ago | reply)
Thermophle the Edmund Fitzgerald went down on November 10, 1975; a thoughtful choice for a November song! Were you aware of the Milwaukee connection, prior events, the rogue waves?
Candace Saturday Sun from Nick Drake for sure; how about From the Morning or Harvest Breed? How about Mysteries or Funny Time of the Year or anything -- for that matter -- Beth Gibbons did with Portishead.
_marmota I wasn't familiar with Sun Kil Moon -- I remember Red House Painters -- but I had a good listen and I'm liking what I've heard; especially Carry Me Ohio and Tiny Cities Made of Ashes and Floating. Thanks. My favourite Yo La Tengo, oddly enough, has to be a very loose cover of the Beatles' Paperback Writer!
Shooting Chris Weezer is a good fit, how about I throw on Island in the Sun for those of us who long for warmer climes this time of year? Certainly, have a real autumn suggestion, don't hesitate as long as it's not Guns and Roses' November Rain. The local classic station is trying to give Stairway to Heaven a run for its money with November Rain, help!

Yes, I've seen a number of TV shows on the event and it is always mentioned on the news every Nov 10. The radio stations play that song on the anniversary, and I always look forward to hearing it. :)

I am loving Rilo Kiley's "Better Son or Daughter" right now. I don't know if it's autumn-ish, but it feels that way to me.
I am making a CD for my sister right now - I have to go find fd's tool to make her a cover, methinks!

oH! Romain you are a music expert... and that's me that should ask your for advice... the cd cover is marvellous... but coming form you is not a susprise...
let's see autumn and november... some songs from Nick Cave...
'into my arms' and 'where the wild roses grow' there is a fall mood in these songs...
can i think and come back later?
take care music muse!
roamin (67 months ago | reply)
Methanie Rilo Kiley is a-okay as is anything Jenny Lewis sets her voice to for that matter. Perhaps Happy from Rabbit Fur Coat with the Watson Twins? Wanna burn off an extra copy and I'll swap you for whatever this turns out to be?
brilho-de-conta At least your taste in music is not jaded like mine; you never fail to surprise me with your choices! Wasn't thinking Nick Cave but now that you have mentioned him... perfect. Where the Wild Roses Go is a definate addition. Certainly, come back with more, I can fit a lot of music and a lot of memories on here.

or where is my mind- pixies. just cuz it's playing on my itunes right now and it's so good.
roamin (67 months ago | reply)
* cate * I know who you mean, but how many bands named Air are there? Mark Kozelek is holding his boarding pass, no doubt. I'm thinking I'll have to do up a double compilation, one inclusion leads to another. For example, mention of Pixies made me think of their cover of Winterlong which reminded me of the Neil Young original which made me think of Neil's Borrowed Tune...

All I can think of (know how something gets stuck in your head) is Mamas and Papas 'California Dreaming'. Oh and eric prydz vs pink floyd www.threebeatrecords.co.uk/search/artist/eric prydz vs pink floyd cheered me up *so much* on the way to work today...great title..

The Kinks - Autumn Almanac ..... (but with memories of summertime too)

"For The Widows In Paradise, For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti " by Sufjan Stevens (off the Michigan album). Let me know if you need a copy ;)
roamin (67 months ago | reply)
wakejunkie Another 'why didn't I think of that!' Thinking Neil, reminded me of the song he did with Randy Bachman, former Guess Who and Bachman Turner Overdrive and Margot Timmons of Cowboy Junkies, called Portage and Main Fifteen Below.
cath9 This sort of describes me! The flute bit, when I hear it, is always a reminder of winter, kinda like Simon and Garfunkel's (later the Bangles) Hazy Shade of Winter.
The Pink Floyd mash-up was a hoot, I was wondering if the same sort of treatment on Comfortably Numb would make it danceable. :)
The hills are alive Perfect and I know my summertime memories always include The Kinks' Lazing on a Sunny Afternoon.
anniebee Thanks, Miss Bee. I'd include anything off Michigan, no matter the month, no matter the season. I must put Prairie Fire That Wanders About from Illinois on and maybe next time I Am the Rake.

The obvious choice from among Vivaldi's Le quattro stagioni. . . ?
roamin (67 months ago | reply)
leeontheroad Concerto No. 3 in F major, Op. 8, RV 293, of course!
I always though I would enjoy hearing the original 12 concertos, Op. 8, Il Cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione and the sonnets written for them. I can see this is going to become a two CD exercise for I can't forget Tchaikovsky's The Seasons, 18 Morceaux, Aveu Passione in E Minor & Others -- Autumn's Song either.

Deserves a place on each sampler ever created today or in the future :-)

Since you went away,
The days grow long,
And soon I'll hear cold winter song.
But I miss you most of all, my darling,
When autumn leaves start to fall.

John Baird (67 months ago | reply)
This fun, i've got two.
Tom Waits "Murder in the Red Barn"
Marianne Faithfull's version of "As Tears Go By"; she's got autumn in her voice.
roamin (67 months ago | reply)
eeloy Can't leave David Sylvian off, that would be a sacrilege! Your mention reminded me of Harold Budd's It's Steeper Near the Roses (for David Sylvian) from Avalon Sutra, I believe; very fall-ish.
anideg Ah, ani, your visits and your words always brighten my days. Autumn Leaves from the Ninja Tune Retrospective Zen compilation is a perfect pick. I've always had a sweet spot for radio pirates and these guys were the best. Coldcut reminded me of Coldplay and There's Gold in Them Hills which always struck me as being a fall song.
John Baird I wonder if that's autumn or whiskey in her voice? A perfect pick for an autumn song. I've been listening to Ruby Tuesday a bit of late, wondering if perhaps the free-spirited Ruby was Marianne Faithfull. Incidentally, my choice, leading this off, was originally a toss-up between November and Murder in the Red Barn.

Shooting Chris I've always thought of The Only Living Boy in New York and the album Bookends as fall-ish. Track for track, Bookends has to be Simon & Garfunkel's best album. America and Mrs. Robinson, flights of fluff and fancy like Punky's Dilemma and At the Zoo and the hopelessly melancholic Old Friends and A Hazy Shade of Winter complete this autumnal album.
h Glad you like this, but come on now, play fair. Suggest a tune, you know you've got one. Don't be shy, step right up, satisfaction (in the joy of participation) guaranteed.

Hey roamin great idea we did the same thing in my seaside group
www.flickr.com/groups/theseasidetowntheyforgo ttoclosedown...
I would suggest," Cattle and Cane" by the Go-betweens.
Not really an autumnal song as such, however it's such a beautiful & evocotive tune it's worthy of any compilation.
Best to you too roamin all the way from Yorkshire,
have a good one.
