Backup Backup Backup - And Test Restores

This server was destroyed in the Choteau fire in NE Oklahoma on 11/27. This is why I stress to my clients the need for off-site backups. That's a telephone on top.

Any small business owners out there should ask themselves "What would I do tomorrow if none of my data was retrievable". The answer in many cases is "I'd go out of business". Backups are cheap insurance, and if you don't store them off-site, you will regret it one day. Even taking yesterday's tape home with you is better than leaving it at the office.

Ha! I joke that it looked like their cooling fans stopped. Though TX made the CNN today for having some high winds and fires that destroyed 6 houses last night, Oklahoma did not make the national news.
At last count, over 30 homes and businesses have been lost, and some fires are still burning. We had 70 mph winds yesterday evening, and still no rain.

I took the hard drive out, and put it into another system and it worked just fine.

Crazy. The client was so HAPPY.

Do they have a backup solution now? Sadly, no. They don't want to spend the money.

That is why I hate almost *ALL* people. Bar none. My two years of technology experience sealed that, let me tell you.

I'm now working on a technology that will destroy all lower and mid-level IT managers...

This company had a backup solution back then. It was my company. However, they didn't bother to store their tapes off-site. Honestly, I should check if they are doing that now. If not, I'm sure the photo can remind them they should do so.
Again, clue me in on your plan. I'm curious with "two" years of tech experience what has motivated you. I'm on my 18th year now, and though I have a list of enemies, I haven't yet targeted an entire category. : -)

It's as close as I've come to actually losing my $#!+ on a manager. And I never did. I never once said anything unprofessional. But the stuff I've seen... dude. Whoooo, boy. And I bet that, over beers, we could really exchange some stories. Cheers!

PBK: One of our engineers took the guts out of the hard drives and put them in good enclosures we had on hand (without a clean room) and the similar server he put them in booted right up! It was a SCO Unix box.
