Winky, the one-eyed cat

I spent six weeks in the summer of 2011 living in Geylang, Singapore.

Our apartment building had a void deck (an open area on the first floor for communal use) furnished with couches, chairs, and coffee tables and overrun by a pack of stray cats that were well-acclimated to humans and never nasty or skittish around us (not least because they were well taken-care-of by the restaurants in the neighborhood, the service staff of the apartment building, and the buddhist temple next door).

As friendly as they could be with people, apparently there was a fair amount of fighting among themselves, as this one had a rather nasty fight that resulted in the loss of her right eye. Nonetheless, she was the most personable and loving towards humans of all the cats around the building.

We called her Winky.
