Property Tax Protests Due Monday

PROPERTY TAX PROTESTS
Monday's the deadline for filing to appeal your home's property appraisal value.

If you are unhappy about you property tax appraisals you have
until Monday to turn in the form that says you want to protest.

The form is the back of the appraisal notice, or you can download one
from your appraisal district's Web site.

The form is your declaration that you intend to protest and the
reasons — for example, the appraisal is above the market value or out
of whack with those of similar homes in your area, or the home has
serious defects, such as foundation cracks, that affect its value.

There is also a sample letter on the blog that you can copy and paste or if you fill out the linked form I will email it to you.

If you have documentation to bolster your case, such as a private
appraisal, you can submit it. But it's not required.

The appraisal district will schedule a hearing, at which you'll need
to provide evidence to support your claim. Such as market statistics.

When you send in the form, be sure to add a note asking for the
evidence packet, the information on the comparable homes that the
district used in valuing yours. That will help you prepare your case.

The form must be postmarked by Monday or turned in, in person to your
appraisal district by the close of business that day.

This is a busy season for appraisal districts, so you may encounter
long wait times if you call.
