Banana vendors were common all around Albania. They shouted "hadje bananas!"(come, bananas!). Later on, as small supermarkets started appearing, these vendors became rarer. This woman sells bananas besides a makeshift hamburger cafe near a central square in Vlore. In the background is a patriotic sculpture. When civil unrest erupted in 1997, many of the protesters mobbed this area. Here we have many elements of the social forces prevailing in the mid 1990's: intense pride and patriotism at overcoming communism, economic desperation and impromptu enterpreneurship.
