DSC02701

Reflective fabric tape sewn to the Xtracycle bags. Hi-viz yellow in the day, reflective white at night.
Down Low Glow
White Scotchlite stripes on all visible sides of the cranks
Planet Bike SuperFlash
Blackburn Mars 3.0
Reflective triangle sticker
Not as visible in this photo, but this is a strip of black scotchlite tape. It's nearly invisible in the day, being a black sticker on a dark grey frame. And it's much brighter than you might expect at night. Not quite as reflective as the white tape, but still pretty good.
Yellow Scotchlite tape wrapped around the fork (both sides)
Plastic spoke reflector
Plastic spoke reflector
Schwalbe reflective sidewall Big Apple tires (could use cleaning)
Not visible in this shot, but there's a CatEye flashing headlight here
Frame bag holds a spare tube, patch kit, multi-tool, DLG battery pack, and first aid kit. I could probably add some reflective tape to it, too.

Heh, yeah. It's a bit overkill. But it gets tons of comments riding across campus, and plenty of room from cars on the street. I love it.

I'm with Southbay_Cruisers1: it's not overkill if it saves your life. I'm all for overlighting.

The DLG is the key to safety, I reckon. Car drivers do take notice, in my experience, much more so than w/ a traditional tail-light.

This is lovely. Where did you get your varieties of tape and reflectors? I'm upgrading to an X with my two kids in tow and I can sew, so ... I'd like to apply as much as youv'e got here. And I agree - it's not overkill to make yourself visible!

The vinyl tape I mostly got on eBay from this guy. The cloth grosgrain ribbon came from Seattle Fabrics, and is probably the most effective thing I've added to my X. I've got the fluorescent yellow kind on the freeloaders, and while it does make them uglier, it makes the bike look much bigger, I think. I saw another X on campus recently with the black reflective ribbon sewn on, and it's better for blending in during the day while remaining super visible at night. Red might be a good compromise.

I've added a link to my blog post describing the rest of my gear to the photo description, in case you're interested in the rest.
