Interesting because they really form a pair. Each sign is incomprehensible alone, but quite obvious when you see both.

Anatomically correct without being vulgar. Unlike the traditional gender signs, which are based on a specific cultural dress code, not biology. (Then again, our choice of restroom is only partly an anatomical one.)

(Apparently this has upset some people on copyright grounds but I don't mind. After all, a purist might say I'm violating the copyright of the original artist by reproducing them here. It would have been nice for La Repubblica to link back to the photos on Flickr, though.)
