Bex Polaroid #2

Bex Polaroid #2

Polaroid from the shoot with Bex. I really love this image. I've shot a lot of this Softtone film and had some weird things happen, but this is maybe the best. Sometimes with expired film sections of it don't develop, that's what's going on here. But the way it fit so well with the pose was totally unexpected. Even more, I'd actually asked Bex to try this specific pose, something that I don't do very often.

The unpredictable results that come from working with things like expired film and toy cameras is something I really love. As much as people try to emulate the look of film in their digital images, it's these happy accidents that you just can't duplicate with a Photoshop action or a Lightroom preset.

Christmas arrived a little early this year for me when I got to shoot with Bex. She's a really lovely and a very experienced model. It was fun to have a new face show up and be the first one to get to work with her.

We had a very fun, productive shoot. I'm looking forward to working with her more, and seeing her work with other photographers.

Digital shot of Bex. This shoot was a blast, at one point I said it felt like Christmas morning. Bex just moved to Portland recently, and it was great to have such an experienced model with a really great look just kind of drop into my lap. We have a mutual friend so I had the inside line on booking her first Portland shoot.

We also had a ton of light that day which was really nice. You can see the pattern of my blinds on the lower right side of the frame, I can't remember seeing that happen before. I'm usually shooting with my lens pretty close to wide open and at slow shutter speeds, I have problems sometimes with blurriness. So I was stoked to have it be so bright.

We shot a lot of killer Polaroids, I'll post some of them soon I'm sure.

I took this during our first shoot, about a year and a half ago. It was shot on the Polaroid Artistic Time Zero film that The Impossible Project was selling back then. I really loved that film, the tones were great.

Polaroid self portrait on my 46th birthday (today)

Polaroid self portrait on my 46th birthday (today)

Age is a weird thing. Most people who meet me guess I'm in my low or mid thirties. I don't feel 46 but I know I am. Sometimes I wish I was 25 and knew what I know today. I've had a lot of wasted opportunities in my life. But I'm really glad I grew up when I did and experienced the things I have.

These last few years have been pretty amazing. I never imagined that in my mid forties I'd start making art again and meet so many wonderful people. I'm very excited about what's coming up, too. I have some great shoots lined up for December and January, and I'm hoping to do a book next year.
