Pear Kisses

Pear Kisses by Richard-.
Warren, Connecticut. Went up to Averill Farm to buy apples, pears, and quinces for our apple pie baking marathon this weekend. Figured I'd get them now so I could photograph them before they get "pied." Got them all washed and lined up regiment style for their group picture.

These bosc pears are maybe the most photographed and painted fruit on earth and I can see why, very photogenic they are. Tomorrow I'll work on shots of quinces and the various types of apple I got: we like our pies filled with a variety of apples, some pears, and a small amount of quince for bite. This "aggregate" makes for a more interesting and varied texture and taste.

Well, if you want to make pear cream pie, it looks like the 85mm f/1.2 is pretty good at doing the creaming.

another does of bokeh? This is a beautiful one. The pear behind the one on the viewer's far right is an integral part of the photo, leaning forward as it does, changing the whole composition. Without it I think the photo would not work as well. Well done indeed...

Wonderful, I like the details in front, and also like how you lead the viewer eyes to the background from the right side.

So beautiful...Bosc pears deserve the attention they get, don't they? Such rich golds and glow ... you did them justice!

Thank you all for your kind words about this image, I got lucky as it was lit with a single overhead fluorescent light. Hey, who needs expensive studio lighting?

God, that lens IS killer. I am suffering such envy right now. Do you have to stand really far away, or do you get to be in the face of all that succulent fruit?

Michaela there are two things I don't like about this lens: the minimum focus distance is about 3.5 feet and it has relatively slow AF. So, no, I was back pretty far compared to what I'd have liked to have been.

Thanks Dale, it's fun to play with this toy again.

This is a beautiful shot... I use the Nikon 85mm, and have similar issues, but i have to say that like you should be with this, the lens simply captures light and color like (almost) no other.

Totally beautiful. I rather like photographing these, too, but have never achieved anything like this. Perhaps I should start making pies! Faved.

You're right - they are very photogenic! I don't know if I've ever seen so many pears in the one photo. Hope you had fun with your baking.

Beautiful light in this. Glad I didn't have to do the washing & lining up though. Nicely captured :-)

Richard-  Pro User  says:

Meredith: washing and lining up wasn't too hard. We washed and peeled hundreds of apples and pears last year and we're at it again this year. Fewer pears this year though as they don't last as long and we only bake 4 pies a day. So far this year we've got 12 fruit pies in the freezer and our compost is full of apple and pear peels.

very nice composition with the pears! So the pies have all three fruits in them? - - sounds delicious, wouldn't mind the recipe :-)

kmrphotography: For each pie cut up 1 quince, 2 pears and the rest apples. The rest is crust, butter, flour, a touch of cinnamon and another spice I can't remember (my wife does that part). My job is picking, washing, and peeling the fruit. The crust making and pie assembly is done by the boss. Oh, my other job is to eat. I'm very good at that.
