County Motors No.99 (UCX275)

One of a pair of Guy Wulfrunians delivered to County Motors of Lepton in September 1960 is seen taking a break between duties. Nos.99 & 100 (UCX276) carried 75 seat bodies by Chas. Roe of Crossgates in Leeds, as did all but 6 of the total Wulfrunian build of 137 machines.

Unfortunately these vehicles suffered from the same much-publicised shortcomings of the type as a whole and both examples spent much of their time back at Guy Motor’s Fallings Park factory in Wolverhampton undergoing remedial work. On these occasions County Motors were loaned 8072DA, one of the two Wulfrunian demonstrators.

It was no surprise that barely two years after purchase these two buses were sold to the magnet for Wulfrunians, West Riding Automobile Company where they became fleet numbers 995 & 996 respectively.

In this picture the blinds are set for the short trip from Huddersfield to Emley via Lepton (Highgate Lane) & Flockton.

The nearside staircase, a feature of the Wulfrunian, can be glimpsed through the open door. The fact that the staircase rose immediately from the platform necessitated the use of asymmetric doors with two wide leaves folding to the front and two narrower ones folding against the stairs.

Interestingly No.99 has had the nearside front grille for the Cave-Brown-Cave heating and ventilation system removed. Perhaps this was a company modification as the set-up was troublesome to say the least, although it had been refitted by the time it entered service with West Riding.

Now in preservation at the Black Country Museum UCX275 has been restored in West Riding livery.
