FYI - the area was NOT left like this. There was a clean up crew that workedfor 4 hours to clean up the insanity left behind.

Nobody cleaned up my street. The sidewalks are still littered with bananas, paint bombs, tomatoes and crap.

[in response to the Gothamist linkage...]

for the record, this shot was taken in the heat of the action, in the middle of the event, at the finish-line, where lots of last-minute sabotage, effort, and sprinting was involved.

Thanks to the efforts of Team COBRA and the hard work of the individuals running the event, I can vouch that this street was not left in this condition. As a matter of fact, hours after the event ended, I was there watching the clean-up efforts in full-swing.

Surplus carts were hauled away. TONS of trash bags were filled with debris and removed from the vicinity under the scrutiny of the NYPD, who oversaw the permit-granted event, which culminated on a closed block.

I did observe a few thoughtless/drunk teams who refused to assist with the cleanup, despite the judges persuing them and rebuking them as they simply walked off.

So, anyone that has issues with the aftermath should chalk it up to irresponsible participants, not the people running the event; the event co-ordinators really put in A LOT of work to make this happen and to leave the area reasonably clean.

And to the naysayers... come on, folks, its NYC. It amuses me how folks love to hate on anything fun. Shit happens, y'all. Bananas on your sidwalk? Cry me a freakin' river. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, anyway. In a city where drunken frat-boys puke on hundreds of street corners every weekend, and trash and filth are absurdly and presciently rampant, it amuses me that the hoi polloi finds reason to complain. And its a shame that folks are spoil-sports to an event that fosters fun for hundreds of New Yorkers, a surpsingly large international contingent, and widespread international media coverage.

I also can't help but think that the same people that are complaining about their streets being littered are the very ones who also speak out about the "Disneyfication" of NYC, and whom have probably been overheard saying things like "I moved to Red Hook to escape the banality that has become NYC; its just more edgy and artistic here!"

If you're that obsessed with pristine streets, maybe NYC isn't the place for you? Try, perhaps, San Francisco?
